Things to focus upon:
Substrate- a layer under something, such as the surface on which a living thing grows. Like the soil, or the wood chip mulch under a rose garden, feeding the roots, one can focus upon ground zero. Focus upon the "basics"-- the essence of Jesus, the Word. A substrate can scientifically refer to a substance (like faith) on which an enzyme (like works) act to produce a chemical reaction (like blessings activated all around us). Focusing on the substrate can mean doing a simple thing, and believing for it to produce eventual fruit.
A young friend once told me that she was trying to just do the things before her-- simple things, like the dishes for her and her husband. This was her way of being occupied and helpful at a time when she was unemployed and uncertain of exacly what to do, facing a disheartening time. Yet she was actively struggling against depression by refusing to fully fold, and in this time frame, she had inspiration and vision given to her by Jesus. She has the fruit of a beautiful relationship with the Lord in which ultimately my observation is that there is a truly deep, joyous dependence upon Him.
Magistrate- this could refer to overseers or administers of the law, or to the Jewish Supreme Court- "the Great Council" back in biblical times. While we search for what to do in the moment, we can find ways in which God's vision may intersect with leaders' visions and assist them in this. We ourselves can "judge" our own lives, and begin to allow God to prune so much clutter in order to aid in nurturing the substrate to bear more fragrant flowers, nutrient dense fruit, rich greenery--more value in our lives.
Having done all, stand...firmly armed and ready for blessings. Substrate, magistrate, and lastly...gratefully wait.
